Children's Hospital of Soochow University

The Children’s Hospital of Soochow University was founded in 1959 by the famous Chinese pediatric specialists Chen Wumin, Peng Da’en and He Fuzhen. It was established as an autonomous pediatric branch of the First Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou Medical College. The hospital, which is directly subject to Jiangsu Commission of Health, has been developed into a tertiary level-A children’s hospital and integrates clinical practice, training and research.

Over the past 60 years of its development, the Children’s Hospital of Soochow University has established two branches, the General Hospital and Jingde Road Branch. The General Hospital is located on the east side of Jinji Lake, covering an area of nearly 60,000 square meters. The first phase of the project covered a construction area of 133,000 m2. It officially started operation on June 1, 2015. The Jingde Road Branch is located in the center of the Soochow Ancient City, surrounded by beautiful ancient gardens. It covers an area of 18,000 m2 and a construction area of 45,000 m2. The hospital has 1,500 beds and a staff of 1,916.

As the Pediatric Emergency Center in Jiangsu Province, the hospital provides emergency care for critically ill children in Soochow and surrounding areas. It actively carried out pandemic from 2020 to 2022. It has made important contributions to the development of children’s medical care and especially to the prevention and treatment of COVID for pediatric patients in Jiangsu and Soochow. In 2022, the hospital provided emergency care to a total of 2.35 million patients. Discharged patients exceeded 70,000 with a total of 28,000 surgery and an average hospital stay of 5-7 days.

The hospital hosts the Soochow University Pediatrics Department's doctoral and master programs and well as the Emergency Department's master program. There are currently 86 postgraduate instructors, including 30 doctoral instructors on staff. It provides training for overseas students and enrolls 75 undergraduates, more than 120 full-time master's students and 70 doctoral students annually. The hospital has five National Standardized Training Centers for residents (Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery, Anesthesia, Radiology, Ultrasound) and two National Standardized Training centers for specialists (Neonatal and Perinatal Care, Pediatric Anesthesiology), of which the Pediatric Center has been successfully upgraded to a Key Specialty Center for the standardized training of residents. As such, it is responsible for the centralized and standardized training of pediatricians and doctors of various related specialties in Soochow. It was the first to introduce the American Heart Association Life Support certified course series and enrolls more than one hundred physicians each year.
